The city of Coimbatore is surrounded by a number of tourist spots that are famous for scenic beauty and enchantment. The Ooty Botanical Garden, Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Parambiukulam – Aliyar Dams, Thirumurthy Dam, Top Slip, Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary and Siruvani Waterfalls are the major travel destinations from Coimbatore.

Udhagamandalam, popularly known as Ooty which is atop The Nilgiris is one of the most popular tourist spots in Asia. The misty blue mountain and the forest rich in flora and fauna are the greatest attractions. The two adjoining towns – Coonoor and Kotagiri are also famous tourist spots. The Botanical Garden in Ooty, which was established in the year 1847, is still attracting thousands of tourists every year. The Flower Show and Dog Show are the major events. Other picnic spots at Ooty are Doddabetta, Lamb’s Rock and Pykara Lake. Rooms and cottages of star grade and economy grade are available for accommodation. The tariffs are different during season and off-season.

Anamalai Wild life Sanctuary is near Pollachi, a satellite town of Coimbatore. The sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 1400 meters in the Western Ghats. This sanctuary is spread over an area of about 960 Sq. Kms. It is a shelter for various kinds of animals like elephants, gaur, tiger, bear, civet cat, green pigeon, Pangolin etc. The nearby Amaravathi Reservoir has a good population of crocodiles. Top Slip is the most popular picnic spot in Anamalai Hills.

The Parambikulam –  Aliyar dam is located at Anamalai. The series of dams constructed over the rivers of Parambikulam, Aliyar, Nirar, Sholayar, Thunakadavu, Thekkadi and Palar rivers for irrigation and generation of power are marvelous monuments of construction skills.

Thirumurthy Dam is situated below Thirumurthy Hills which is 20 kms away from Udumalaipet, on the Coimbatore – Palani Highway. This dam is very near to Amaravathi Dam and the Crocodile Farm.

The Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary is about 70kms away from Coimbatore. This sanctuary accommodates a host of animals like elephant, tigers, leopards, deers, birds and snakes. Hotel accommodation is available at the sanctuary.
